Tim Cahill's 87th-minute equaliser for Everton prevented Liverpool from regaining pole position. Steven Gerrard looked to have done enough for the dominant home side with his scorching second-half opener but the Toffees rallied to force a 1-1 draw.
Consequently, United and Liverpool both have 47 points - the champions are top by virtue of a better goal difference (24 versus 22) and have played one game less.
There was also late drama at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Stoke City had taken the lead against Chelsea on the hour through Rory Delap and it looked as if the Potters would hang on to register a famous victory (and their first away from home in the league this season) against Scolari’s side.
But Juliano Belletti equalised on 88 minutes before Frank Lampard, aided by a deflection, won the match in injury time to complete a stunning turnaround.
There was another come-from-behind victory at the Stadium of Light, as Aston Villa overturned a 1-0 deficit to win and stay fourth. Gareth Barry scored from the penalty spot with 10 minutes to go to seal the win after James Milner had cancelled out Danny Collins’ early Sunderland goal. Arsenal are still in fifth place, three points behind Villa, after winning 3-1 at Hull in the Saturday evening match.
Blackburn and West Bromwich Albion both won 3-0 against sides from the North East. Rovers beat Newcastle at Ewood Park with strikes from Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts (2), while West Brom mauled Middlesbrough at the Hawthorns. Chris Bunt opened the scoring after four minutes before Robert Koren bagged a second-half brace.
Across town at Eastlands, Manchester City snuck past Wigan with a 1-0 victory thanks to a superb strike from Pablo Zabaleta. The Blues took the lead on 52 minutes and then had skipper Richard Dunne sent off two minutes later. But despite the numerical advantage, Wigan couldn’t find a way through the City defence.
Sunday's action saw West Ham beat Fulham 3-1 at Upton Park while United's FA Cup opponents Tottenham were held 1-1 by Portsmouth at White Hart Lane.
